BMW 3 Series Sales Climb 46% Ahead of Next-Generation G50 Arrival

BMW of North America reported a significant surge in demand for the 3 Series sedan during the third quarter of 2026. Despite the recent unveiling of its next-generation successor, the current 3 Series saw U.S. sales jump 46.4% compared to the same period last year.

According to BMW of North America, the company delivered 11,256 units of the 3 Series in Q3 2026. This growth significantly outpaced the brand’s overall performance, which saw a 3.4% increase with total sales of 100,210 vehicles for the quarter.

The spike in interest for the “G20” generation comes at a unique transitional moment for the automaker. While the current model is reaching the end of its lifecycle, the eighth-generation 3 Series (G50) and the all-electric i3 only made their global debuts in late September 2026.

Traditional Design vs. The Neue Klasse

The surge in sales for the current 3 Series may reflect consumer interest in securing the model’s traditional styling and internal combustion architecture before the brand shifts toward its more futuristic “Neue Klasse” design language. While the upcoming G50 generation promises advanced technology, the outgoing model has established a strong reputation for its blend of performance and classic BMW aesthetics.

Market analysts also note a shift in powertrain preferences. While overall electrified vehicle sales for the brand saw fluctuations, sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) rose by 23.2% in the third quarter. This suggests that buyers are increasingly looking for transitional technology as they wait for the full rollout of BMW’s next-generation electric fleet.

Pricing and Availability for the 2027 Models

The upcoming G50 3 Series is expected to reach North American dealerships in the first quarter of 2027. Pricing for the new lineup has already been established to reflect its move upmarket.

The new G50 330 is set to start at $49,900. For those looking toward the fully electric transition, the i3 50 xDrive will carry a starting price of $61,500. Until those units arrive, the current G20 remains the primary volume driver for BMW’s sedan lineup.

Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO of BMW of North America, noted the steady demand across the portfolio as the company manages this generational handover. With the 3 Series leading the growth, the company enters the final quarter of the year with strong momentum in its core sedan segment.
