Embark Studios is opening the gates to its extraction shooter, Arc Raiders, with a four-day free trial that gives players full access to the game and its massive new expansion. Starting October 8, 2026, at 9 AM UTC, the trial allows newcomers to experience the base game alongside the “Frozen Trail” update on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The trial period concludes on October 12 at 8 AM UTC. To encourage long-term engagement following the game’s pivot to a premium model, Embark has confirmed that all progress earned during these four days will carry over to the full version for players who choose to purchase it. This move serves as a strategic entry point for those curious about the title’s shift from its original free-to-play plans to a paid experience.

Inside the Frozen Trail Expansion
The “Frozen Trail” update, which launches simultaneously with the Arc Raiders free trial, introduces the Pendola Pass map. This new environment is a snowy Italian region characterized by an abandoned supermarket and a central town square. Players exploring the pass must contend with a “Flash Freeze” mechanic, a dynamic weather condition that forces squads to find immediate shelter or face the elements.
The expansion also broadens the game’s mechanical depth with new gear and threats. Four new enemy types are joining the roster: the Bully, Skulker, Hydra, and the Frigate. The Frigate represents a unique world event rather than a standard boss; players must board the massive ARC vessel and complete sabotage-style puzzles to take it down. To combat these threats, players can equip the Stiletto light-ammo battle rifle or the Bantam heavy-ammo revolver. New utility gadgets include a grappling hook, a Tether Launcher, a Yank Grenade, and a handheld camera for documenting the post-apocalyptic world.
For those looking to bypass the usual progression requirements, the trial includes a “teaming up” shortcut. While the Pendola Pass map typically requires previous gameplay to unlock, new players can access it immediately if they join a squad with a veteran player who has already gained entry.

Post-Trial PvE Testing and Security
Immediately following the free-access window, Embark Studios will shift focus to a specialized PvE Toggle beta test. Running from October 13 to October 20, 2026, this test allows players to opt into matchmaking where player-on-player damage is disabled. This is aimed at players who prefer the cooperative extraction experience without the constant threat of rival squads, though it remains a temporary testing phase for the mechanic.
The studio is also tightening its security measures alongside this influx of new players. Embark has announced a strict “no warnings, no second chances” anti-cheat policy, intended to protect the game’s ecosystem during and after the trial period. While the focus is largely on tactical combat and survival, the update adds a touch of levity with two playable musical instruments—the banjo and harmonica—allowing Raiders to find a moment of calm between encounters.
