Aradhana Misra Appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress President in Leadership Overhaul

The Congress party appointed Aradhana Misra “Mona” as the new president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) on Friday, October 2, 2026. The move, announced on Gandhi Jayanti, signals a major organizational overhaul intended to solidify the party’s standing within the INDIA alliance ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Misra, a three-time MLA representing the Rampur Khas constituency in Pratapgarh, replaces Ajay Rai, who had served as the state chief since August 2023. The transition comes as the party seeks to build on momentum from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections while addressing internal coordination and alliance logistics.

The Congress leadership overhaul includes several key appointments to strengthen the state committee.

Broad Organizational Restructuring

The appointment of Misra is part of a wider restructuring of the Uttar Pradesh leadership tier. Saharanpur MP Imran Masood has been named the Working President of the UPCC. The dual leadership of Misra and Masood is viewed by political analysts as a strategic attempt to balance the party’s demographic appeal, targeting a “Brahmin-Muslim” coalition that was traditionally a cornerstone of the Congress vote base in the state.

Further changes to the state hierarchy include:

  • Chaudhary Virendra Singh: Appointed as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Uttar Pradesh, the post previously held by Misra.
  • Devinder Nishad and Alok Prasad: Named as Senior Vice Presidents of the UPCC to strengthen the party’s executive reach.

Focus on the 2027 Alliance Strategy

Upon her appointment, Misra stated her commitment to upholding the principles of the INDIA alliance. She emphasized that the primary objective of the new leadership is to form an alliance government in 2027. This focus on unity follows periods of public discussion regarding seat-sharing and credit for recent electoral gains between Congress and its primary state partner, the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav welcomed the continuation of the partnership, stating that the SP and Congress alliance will move forward together into the 2027 contest. The coordination between Misra and the SP leadership will be critical in navigating the complex seat-sharing negotiations expected over the next two years.

The reshuffle in Uttar Pradesh occurred simultaneously with changes in other state units, including Punjab, where Pargat Singh was named the new state unit president. These moves follow high-level deliberations between national party leadership and state representatives to streamline regional operations for upcoming electoral cycles.
