Disney Licenses Percy Jackson and Ice Age to Netflix for Promotional Window

Disney is shifting its streaming strategy by licensing several of its high-profile Disney+ originals and library titles to Netflix for a strictly limited time. Starting October 4, 2026, Netflix subscribers will gain access to the first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians and the complete original Ice Age film collection, marking a significant departure from Disney’s previous “walled garden” approach to its content.

The move functions as a tactical “sampling” campaign designed to leverage Netflix’s global reach. By placing core franchises on its rival’s platform, Disney aims to capture a broader audience just before major new installments premiere exclusively on its own service. According to A.V. Club, the non-exclusive agreement serves as a short-term marketing funnel rather than a permanent licensing shift.

The Marketing Funnel: Dates and Deadlines

The timing of these releases is meticulously aligned with Disney’s upcoming theatrical and streaming calendar. The three-month window for Percy Jackson on Netflix is set to conclude shortly after the third season premieres on Disney+ on November 20, 2026. This setup effectively uses Netflix to build hype for the new season, forcing viewers to migrate back to Disney+ to continue the story.

Similarly, the five original Ice Age films will remain on Netflix for three months to reacquaint audiences with the franchise before the theatrical debut of the sequel, Ice Age: Boiling Point, on February 5, 2027.

Expanded Rollout and Pixar Arrivals

Following the initial October launch, Disney will continue to trickle content onto Netflix through the end of 2026 and into early 2027. The schedule includes several procedural hits and animated features:

  • Will Trent: Seasons 1 through 4 are scheduled to arrive on Netflix on November 3, 2026.
  • Shifting Gears: The first two seasons will be available starting December 1, 2026.
  • Tracker: Seasons 1 through 3 will move to Netflix on February 26, 2027, though this specific title is restricted to international markets outside the United States.
  • Pixar and Disney Animation: Films including Soul, Raya and the Last Dragon, and the upcoming Elio are slated for Netflix release in early 2027.

While Disney is opening its vault for these specific titles, the company is maintaining a strict line regarding its most valuable intellectual property. Marvel Studios and Star Wars franchise titles are not included in this licensing deal and will remain exclusive to Disney+ for the foreseeable future.

This strategy suggests a new phase of hyper-monetization where Disney prioritizes franchise awareness over total exclusivity. By treating Netflix as a promotional platform, Disney can generate licensing revenue while simultaneously using its competitor’s massive user base to drive subscriptions for its own platform during peak release windows.
