Wang Xiyu Defeats Zhang Shuai to Win 2026 Asian Games Gold

Wang Xiyu defeated her veteran compatriot Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-1 on Friday to secure the women’s singles gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. The victory ensures China’s continued dominance in the event and earns Wang a provisional qualification quota for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The final, held at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center, lasted just 66 minutes. Wang, 25, showcased clinical precision throughout the match, winning every point on her first serve during the opening set. The loss marks a second Asian Games singles silver for the 37-year-old Zhang, who previously took the runner-up spot in the 2018 tournament.

This result marks China’s sixth consecutive gold medal in the women’s singles event at the Asian Games, according to Olympics.com. The championship match was also the third consecutive all-Chinese final in this discipline, highlighting the nation’s depth in regional competition.

Path to the Podium

Wang’s route to the gold required a significant physical effort prior to the final. In her semifinal match, she overcame top seed Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in a grueling 2.5-hour contest, eventually winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Eala and Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva were both awarded bronze medals for their semifinal appearances.

The gold medal serves as a milestone in Wang’s career recovery following a significant shoulder injury in 2025. That injury forced her to drop out of the top 200 and briefly restart her season on the ITF circuit to rebuild her ranking and match fitness.

Under International Tennis Federation (ITF) rules, the Asian Games gold provides a continental qualification quota for the 2028 Olympics.

The Taipei Times reported that Wang’s performance in the final was characterized by high-pressure serving and aggressive baseline play that left the veteran Zhang with few opportunities to break rhythm. While Zhang ends her singles campaign with silver, her presence in the final at age 37 continues a lengthy career of podium finishes in Asian competition.
