Jonathan David Scores in Three Straight Games to Start Atletico Madrid Loan

Jonathan David has transformed from a rotational option at Juventus to a record-breaking starter at Atletico Madrid in just four weeks. Since joining the club on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day, the Canadian striker has scored in each of his first three La Liga appearances, a streak that culminated in a match-winning goal during the Madrid derby on September 20.

David’s immediate impact has set a new benchmark for the club in the modern era. He is the only player to score in each of his first three La Liga matches for Atletico Madrid in the 21st century. His scoring run, which included goals against Real Sociedad and Osasuna before the derby winner, marks a sharp departure from his final season in Italy.

Tactical Integration and Service

The 26-year-old forward has described his transition to Diego Simeone’s system as a “breath of fresh air,” specifically highlighting the quality of the “last pass” provided by his new teammates. While David struggled to find consistency at Juventus—netting only eight goals in 46 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign—he has benefited from the creative output of wing-back Alejandro Grimaldo and the emergence of Giuliano Simeone.

Beyond the tactical fit, the move was facilitated by a unique financial arrangement. Juventus is reportedly covering 50% of David’s wages during the loan period to ease the transition. The deal also includes a non-mandatory buy option set at €25 million, giving the Madrid side the opportunity to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

The recruitment process reportedly involved international collaboration. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch is said to have spoken directly with Diego Simeone to recommend David before the deal was finalized, emphasizing the striker’s suitability for Atletico’s high-intensity style.

International Momentum

David’s club form has carried over to the international stage. He scored the only goal in Canada’s 1-0 victory over Chile in late September. He is currently in Montreal with the national team as they prepare to host Peru at Stade Saputo on Saturday, October 3.

His resurgence comes at a critical time for Atletico, as the club navigated an early-season injury to Julian Alvarez. David’s ability to provide immediate clinical finishing has allowed Simeone to maintain offensive pressure during a demanding fixture schedule. His efficiency in Spain—three goals in his first three league games—already rivals the output of his entire previous season, validating the move for both the player and the club.
