Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that his country keeps troops on the border with Moldova, as it considers it necessary to prepare for a possible containment of risks from Transnistria.
“Of course, Transnistria, on our southwestern side, is a danger that forces us to send troops to this section of the border in order to contain and control the situation. But I want to emphasize that Transnistria is a matter of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Moldova,” the minister added in a TV interview.
Kuleba stressed that Ukraine is ready to accept any path that Moldova chooses for the reintegration of Pridnestrovie.
He said: “Moldova has the right to determine itself how to develop and how to solve the Transnistrian problem. But this is also a problem for us. I emphasize that this is a problem from a military point of view, which exists for us. “
It is noteworthy that Transnistria, 60% of the population of which are Russians and Ukrainians, sought to separate from Moldova in the last years before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The reason for this was the fear that Moldova would join Romania after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1992, after an unsuccessful attempt by the Moldovan authorities to solve the problem by force, Transnistria became de facto an autonomous region.
