British singer Sting predicted on Thursday that artists would fight a “battle” to protect their work from the use of artificial intelligence in the music industry.
“The building blocks of music belong to us, the people,” the 71-year-old ex-Police singer told the BBC. “In the coming years, we all have to fight, namely to protect our human capital from artificial intelligence.”
Artificial intelligence is used to recreate the works of famous musicians. Fake works by artists such as Eminem, Drake, The Weeknd and Oasis have been created using artificial intelligence.
Sting noted that “tools are useful” but felt that humans should control them, as “machines should not be allowed to drive, but care must be taken”.
And the artist added ahead of receiving the Ivor Academy’s top award for music on Thursday that the technology “could work in the realm of electronic music. But for songs that express feelings, I don’t think I’ll be influenced.”
