Ahmed Megahed, former president of the Egyptian Football Association, said the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup will witness the new system for the first time.
It is planned to hold the 2026 World Cup on the North American continent, in particular, with the joint organization of 3 countries: the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
The 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams for the first time instead of the previous system of 32 teams, with 9 spots allocated directly to teams on the African continent with a tenth team participating in the intercontinental supplement.
Mujahid wrote on his Facebook page: “The 54 teams from the African continent will be equally divided into 9 groups, each with 6 teams that compete in the group stage in a back and forth league system. The first from each group has the right to directly represent Africa in the world championship in 2026.
Mujahid added that the tenth team to take part in the Intercontinental Playoffs will be determined through a tournament that will bring together the top 4 teams that come second in nine groups, provided that the winner of this tournament will qualify for the playoffs. off, in which teams from other continents participate.
Notably, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar witnessed the best achievement by an African team in the history of the tournament, with Morocco reaching the semi-finals and finishing in fourth place, the best result for an African team since the tournament began in 1930.
