Scientists are developing a virtual reality technology that allows you to not only see but also smell the augmented 3D environment.
Engineers from Beihang University in China and the University Citi Hong Kong has created a futuristic headset that can emit 30 different flavors to the wearer, including coffee, waffles and ethanol.
Stranger than sci-fi, the project aims to provide virtual reality users with a unique experience by expanding the range of “physical experiences” they can experience while playing.
She added: “The sense of smell plays an important role in human perception, and it is as important as sight and hearing.”
The team’s pioneering technique uses small wax-filled, scent-impregnated pads that are heated by an attached electrode to release the scent.
Wireless odor generators, called OGs, can be placed directly under the user’s nose.
Another design proposed by the team is for the user to wear a face mask.
The study suggests that scent generators can be used outside of augmented reality games, including to improve the experience in distance learning classrooms.
The engineers also suggested using the device to help amnesiac patients regain their lost memories.
