Earlier this year, organizers Koelnmesse and German Games Industry communicated Association (GAME) announced that there were plans for a hybrid event that would be held partly physical, partly digital. Those plans have now been abandoned.
“Despite the hybrid concept being well received by our partners, we had to acknowledge that Gamescom is coming too soon for many companies in the industry to make reliable plans, “said Oliver Frese, COO of Koelmesse. “But one thing is clear: everyone now needs the ability to make reliable plans. That’s why this year we’re going for a fully digital Gamescom again. With enough time, we can offer gamers an even stronger online event by the end of August.”
The planned dates have also been adjusted. The annual Gamescom: Opening Night Live, hosted by Geoff Keighley and featuring several new announcements and trailers, now takes place on Wednesday, August 25. The main days of the event are then on August 26-27. The show was previously scheduled to run from August 25-29.
