Launching smartphones with EVs
Meizu, a smartphone company in China, is planning to launch a smartphone in collaboration with Polestar, an electric vehicle (EV) company. The goal behind this partnership is to create a seamless transition between smartphones and EVs. The idea is to have apps and features on the phone easily accessible on the car’s dashboard screen. This move is part of a larger trend where automakers aim to make cars more like mobile phones on wheels.
Why launch a smartphone?
While it may seem unusual for car companies to venture into the smartphone market, it is gaining traction. Nio, a Chinese EV start-up, also plans to release its own mobile phone. The idea behind this move is to provide a holistic and connected experience for consumers in every aspect of mobility. By launching a smartphone, Polestar can bundle software, apps, services, and features that enhance the overall driving experience. Additionally, it allows carmakers to gain insights into their customers’ habits.
Customized operating system
One of the advantages of launching a smartphone alongside EVs is the ability to customize the operating system. Meizu, for example, has its own operating system called FlyMe, which is also being used for Polestar cars. This integration makes it easier for users to sync their phones with their vehicles. The smartphone from Polestar will likely have a similar operating system, ensuring a seamless user experience.
Polestar 4: A premium offering
Polestar’s latest EV, the Polestar 4, is positioned as a more premium and luxurious option compared to Tesla’s Model Y. With a higher price tag, the Polestar 4 aims to attract customers from German carmakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The CEO of Polestar also sees the car as a competitor to luxury vehicles such as the Porsche Macan. By launching a smartphone, Polestar can further establish itself in the high-end device market for handsets.
