Wagner Group Leader Claims Forces Are Close to Moscow Despite Social Media Blockade
Introduction
Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group, has claimed that his forces are close to the outskirts of Moscow, despite being blocked on social media. This comes after his announcement that he intended to complete the road to Moscow and take control of the Russian capital if Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov did not meet with him, which did not happen.
Wagner Group Forces Advance Toward Moscow
As Wagner continues to advance along the road leading to the Russian capital, the Ribar military website reported today, Saturday. Prigozhin’s commander announced that his troops were on the outskirts of the capital, although many military analysts were skeptical about this.
Security Measures Strengthened in Moscow
The Russian authorities announced the strengthening of security measures at a number of entrances to the capital. A Russian military source confirmed that the Wagner convoy that is approaching Moscow includes more than 5,000 fighters. He also went on to say that President Wagner’s plan for Moscow is for his fighters to take up positions in a densely populated area.
Circle of Confrontations Expands
Prigozhin’s statement came at a time when the circle of clashes with the Russian army in southern Russia widened today, Saturday. In the vicinity of the city of Rostov, near the border with Ukraine, where Wagner’s forces entered this morning and took control of his commanders, there was an exchange of fire between the two sides.
\”Promise Not to Retreat\”
Earlier Saturday, Prigozhin confirmed that he had entered the general headquarters of the army command in Rostov, a major center of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, and had taken control of military installations, including the airport. In a video posted on Telegram, he stated that “military facilities in Rostov are under control, including the airport,” as he was followed by people in military uniform.
