Volkswagen is planning to release a high-performance version of its upcoming small electric car, using the iconic GTI badge. The ID GTI concept was unveiled ahead of the IAA Mobility auto show in Munich. The car pays homage to the original Golf GTI, with features such as a golf ball-inspired central controller and a chequer-patterned interior fabric. The ID GTI is longer than the original Golf GTI and will include enhancements like a front-axle differential lock to improve traction. It will also offer different driving modes and simulated gearshifts. The production version of the ID GTI is expected to launch in 2025 and will be priced below €25,000. VW plans to build all versions of its small electric car in Spain, including a small SUV and a sporty hatchback.
