US Treasury Announces Sanctions Against Greens Without Borders for Supporting Hezbollah
Background
Today, Wednesday, the US Treasury announced sanctions against the Lebanese association Greens Without Borders and its director, Zuhair Nale, for supporting Hezbollah.
The US Treasury Department said in a statement that the association has provided “support and cover” for Hezbollah’s operations in southern Lebanon along the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel over the past decade.
Environmental Activism as a Cover
She added that the association “acts publicly under the guise” of environmental activism.
According to the official website, Green Without Borders is a tree-planting NGO. In terms of its goals, it is related to environmental and agricultural education and the organization of afforestation campaigns in villages and regions in southern Lebanon.
However, in 2019, Israel confirmed that the association was a cover that allowed Hezbollah to use its facilities in Operation Avivim in September, when the party fired Kornet rockets from the vicinity of its center against the Israeli army. In addition, the Israeli mission to the UN repeatedly accused him of being part of the Hezbollah military infrastructure.
The Washington Institute backed Tel Aviv’s claim in a report that identified eight previously unknown Greens Without Borders, some of which contain watchtowers and other surveillance infrastructure along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
