Operations Resume at Ultium Cells’ Battery Plant in Warren, Ohio

Ultium Cells LLC’s battery plant in Warren, Ohio has restarted operations after a chemical leak caused a temporary halt in the cathode mixing area, the company confirmed on Wednesday.

The company did not provide specific details regarding when cathode mixing operations resumed or the status of the internal investigation into the leak.

Ultium Cells took immediate action to contain the cathode mixing slurry leak and initiated cleanup procedures in collaboration with a third-party company. The incident only impacted the cathode mixing area, and the rest of the plant remained unaffected.

No employees were exposed or injured as a result of the spill.

OSHA Investigates Ultium Cells’ Warren Plant

Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, reported the incident to the U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA has initiated an investigation to gather information about the incident, the actions taken by Ultium Cells, and the safety of employees.

OSHA spokesperson Scott Allen stated that the investigation aims to determine if employees were exposed to significant hazards, assess the appropriateness of Ultium Cells’ actions, and identify any potential violations of workplace safety and health standards.

Currently, OSHA has six open inspections at Ultium Cells’ Warren plant and has conducted five closed inspections in the past. Ultium Cells has paid a total of $31,078 in fines for violations of OSHA workplace laws, although some penalties were reduced or waived.
