Two men Merseyside Police said they were arrested after an officer was seriously injured by a van.
The officers said he was picking up a backpack filled with with cannabis that was left in road in city of St. Helens on Tuesday evening.
When the officer brought the bag on Hewitt Avenue around 8:15 p.m., he approached a nearby white Ford Transit van, whose passengers were behaving suspiciously.
The van then drove over the officer, hitting him before driving away. force said.
The policeman suffered serious injuries to his shoulder, right arm and right leg and was taken to hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.
Soon it became known about two men fled from vehicle into the fields near the East Lancashire Road and threw away the bag.
bag and vehicle which was left on Ecclesfield Road have been rebuilt for forensic examination.
Two men from Rochdale were arrested on suspicion of infliction of grievous bodily harm with intention and are in guardianship for interrogation.
Chief Inspector Jim Wilde said: “Every single day, Merseyside police officers fearlessly put themselves on in harm way protect public from harm.”
He added: “Unfortunately… our officer’s dedication has come to an end. great cost to him.
“Fortunately, he is now receiving the care and treatment he needs and everyone at Merseyside Police is wishing him the best. full support while he is recovering from this horrific incident.”
He called anyone who could have witnessed any part of incident, or who CCTV camera or video recorder not yet handed over to the police to come forward.
