Experiments on Laboratory Mice
The researchers conducted experiments on laboratory mice, during which they tracked the bacteria in the oral cavity that cause gingivitis. They confirmed that these bacteria had reached the brain and then identified glial cells in the brain that had been exposed to oral bacteria.
Hyperactivity of Glial Cells
The researchers found that the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity leads to hyperactivity of glial cells, which stimulates inflammation of the nerves and prevents the destruction of amyloid plaques. In other words, the presence of inflammation in the gums allows microorganisms to enter the bloodstream and enter other parts of the body, including the brain.
Implications for Alzheimer’s Prevention and Treatment
According to the researchers, this discovery allows for more effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. That is, to prevent neurodegeneration, it is very important to control the inflammation of the oral cavity associated with periodontal disease.
