Introduction

The researchers looked at data from more than 13,500 people in the UK aged 37 to 73 who were not suffering from depression at the start of the study.

Participants’ consumption of nuts was recorded, including unsalted nuts such as almonds, cashews, pistachios, salted or roasted nuts, and peanuts.

They were followed for five years, during which time 8% of them were diagnosed with depression.

The analysis found that low to moderate nut consumption, equivalent to one serving of 30 grams per day, was associated with a 17% lower risk of depression compared to those who did not consume nuts.

The Role of Nuts in Mental Health

The scientists said these results were independent of lifestyle and other health factors, adding that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of nuts on the brain may be responsible for these results.

“Our results highlight another benefit of eating nuts: a 17% reduction in nut-related depression. This gives people a stronger reason to be enthusiastic about nut consumption,” said study lead author Bruno Bizzzzero Peroni of the University of Castile La Mancha in Spain.

Study Findings

In an article for the Journal of The Clinical Nutrition team reported: “This study analyzed the potential association between nut consumption and risk of depression in a large sample of middle-aged and older adults in the UK. The main finding is that regular low levels of moderate nut consumption are associated with a reduced risk of depression compared to with our results. Our results highlight the potential role of nut consumption as a healthy eating behavior in preventing depression in people without other known risk factors for depression, such as obesity, unhealthy lifestyles, loneliness, and medical conditions. Given that diet is a modifiable lifestyle factor, future long-term clinical trials should evaluate whether nut consumption is an effective strategy for preventing depression in adults.”

Conclusion

These findings suggest that incorporating nuts into one’s diet can have a positive impact on mental health. Nut consumption, even in low to moderate amounts, is associated with a reduced risk of depression. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind this relationship and to explore the potential benefits of nut consumption in preventing depression.
