Cardamom: The Superfood with Health and Nutritional Benefits
Introduction
A new study has revealed a range of health and nutritional benefits of cardamom, including increased appetite, fat loss, and reduced inflammation, making it a “superfood.”
Study Findings
Study Principal Investigator Luis Cisneros Zevalos, Professor of Horticulture and Food Science in the Department of Horticulture at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University (Texas A&M University), talks about the study by the Texas A&M University AgriLife Foundation. The study shows that cardamom can be a healthy food, and its consumption can help maintain a lean body weight and reduce fat.
About Cardamom
Cardamom is a spice common in many parts of the world with a warm herbal flavor and aroma that combines camphor, mint, and pepper.
“Cardamom is a spice that is not well known in the United States but is very common in other parts of the world,” Cisneros Zevalos said. “We found that this little spice can burn calories and support body weight while increasing appetite and food consumption.”
Study Details
Studies have been conducted using live animal samples, and various doses of cardamom seeds have been used in the normal diet. Researchers have found that cardamom increases appetite but also increases energy expenditure and reduces fat mass.
Recommended Dosage
The study also presented estimated human doses of cardamom of at least 77 mg for an adult weighing about 60 kg. She stated that this healthy dose can be obtained by eating at least eight to ten cardamom seeds every day.
Effects on Health
The study confirmed that cardamom modulates the neural circuits that regulate lipolysis in adipose tissue and oxidative metabolism of mitochondria in the liver and skeletal muscle.
Cisneros Zevalos noted that other studies have shown that cardamom has anti-inflammatory properties. His research shows that cardamom can reduce minor inflammation that can lead to chronic inflammation and a number of diseases.
