The Failed June Uprising and the Future of Russian Military Group Wagner: A Look into the Aftermath

Article Title

Introduction

It seems that the aftermath of the failed June uprising is still clouding the activities of the Russian military group Wagner.

Wagner has begun to downsize his forces and is trying to restructure them, for reasons primarily to save on the cost of his men’s wages at a time when he is suffering from financial pressure, according to what the British Ministry of Defense has proposed.

The Kremlin has suspended funding

In an intelligence report, the ministry said on Sunday that since the group’s June 2023 uprising, the Russian government has opposed some other activities of the group’s founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, and that there is a real possibility that the Kremlin has stopped funding it.

It is also stated that in this case, Belarus is likely to pay the militants of the group.

Potential Consequences

However, she warned that this issue could become a problem for Minsk. “This large force will result in a huge and unwanted drain on Belarus’ modest resources,” she said.

In June last year, Wagner forces took control of the city of Rostov and occupied the southern military district of the city, then moved towards the Russian capital, stopped 200 kilometers from Moscow and turned back after mediation from Belarus.

Evil Putin

This angered the Kremlin, especially Russian President Vladimir Putin, who at the time emphasized that he would never tolerate “traitors” and vowed revenge before Willen returned to his rhetoric after the Belarusian mediation.

This military coup, or uprising, comes after months of harsh criticism from Prigozhin, a former Putin ally who has been dubbed the Kremlin chef, in defense of Russia.

Rather, he accused the defense minister and chief of staff of treason before withdrawing from the fighting in Ukraine after his group was at the forefront on the fronts alongside Russian forces.

However, a few weeks after leaving for Belarus, he returned and confirmed in an audio recording that the work of the group continues both in Africa and in training centers in Belarus.

The scandalous man also hinted that Wagner may decide to re-recruit fighters if Russia needs it!

Notably, Wagner, although a private group, has always represented Russia’s interests abroad, especially in some African countries, according to several Western intelligence reports, despite Moscow’s denials.
