The Endless Skyrim Editions: Todd Howard’s Email Reveals the Meme and Bethesda’s Latest Expansion

The Perpetual Meme: Multiple Editions of Skyrim

The topic of multiple editions of Skyrim has become a permanent meme on the web. It has gained so much popularity that even Todd Howard, the director and executive producer of Bethesda Game Studios, acknowledges it in an email sent to Bethesda and Xbox staff. The email was sent on the occasion of the start of early access to Starfield, a new science-fiction role-playing game developed by the company.

In the letter of congratulations, which was reported by Windows Central and summarized here, Howard discusses the arduous journey of creating Starfield, which involved the release of several other games. Among these games, Howard mentions “Fallout 4, Skyrim SE, Fallout Shelter, Skyrim VR, Fallout 76, more Skyrim…”

According to the same letter, the development of Starfield was officially presented to the head of ZeniMax in 2013. In the span of twenty years, Bethesda has released three different versions of Skyrim. Howard specifically mentions the special editions released in 2016, the VR version for PSVR and PC from 2017, and the Anniversary Edition, an expanded edition released in 2021. This brings the total number of “Skyrim” editions to four, including the original version. However, when considering each platform and differentiating PC versions based on the store, the count of editions surpasses a dozen.

As we eagerly await the release of our Starfield review today, fans can indulge in creating their own character using the online tool or explore the vast amount of detail shared by Emil Pagliarulo.
