The Driver’s License Functionality on the iPhone Having a Slow Growth Rate and Being Limited to Just Three States

The ability to add a driver’s license or another form of identification to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch was introduced by Apple in 2021. This feature offers residents of participating U.S. states a quick and easy option to display proof of identity or age.

Sadly, states have had to move more quickly to implement the functionality since it was first announced in September 2021; as of now, only Arizona, Colorado, and Maryland have adopted Wallet app IDs. Apple revealed a list of more states that pledged to continue supporting the function. Yet, the states on the list have to make any intentions public.

Which U.S. states support the feature?

  • Arizona (as of March 2022)
  • Maryland (as of May 2022)
  • Colorado (as of November 2022)

Which U.S. states are committed to supporting the feature?

Apple announced in March 2022 that citizens of the nine additional states below would “soon” be able to add their driver’s license or state ID to the Wallet app. But, it must be made clear exactly when each state intends to implement the functionality.

  • Connecticut
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah

According to Apple, Puerto Rico can also use the feature.

Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Wallet, stated in 2021 that the company was “already in negotiations with many more states” and aiming to make the capability available everywhere. Apple has not made any intentions public regarding the international rollout of the functionality.

Notably, in addition to this functionality of the Wallet app, certain states, including Florida and Louisiana, also provide iPhone driver’s licenses through their state-run apps.

Where can IDs in the Wallet app be used?

Wallet app users can currently utilize their driver’s licenses and state ID cards at specific TSA checkpoints within specific U.S. airports:

  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)

Travelers should verify the TSA checkpoint signage to confirm the feature’s availability, according to Apple.
