Advertising sounded just like republican attack straight out of 2020: “She voted against our police and sheriffs,” says the narrator. says.

But digital advertisement – released this week – in fact from Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger, accusing her of being a Republican opponent in 7th Congressional District racePrince William County Council Chief If Vega. of don’t fund the police by voting against county budgets. “If Vega won’t keep us safe,” the final note in the ad. says.

The only catch: Vega itself former policeman – and still in uniform as an auxiliary deputy with Prince William County Sheriff’s Office.

“I find it funny to be honest with you,” Vega said. of ad in interview saying she voted against budgets due to her against tax increases.

The ad offers preview of how police most likely play a key role in highly competitive race between two women with law enforcement backgrounds. And this is happening at a time when Spanberger is co-leading push in Congress with Rep. Tom Rice (RS.C.) Will Increase DOJ Grant Funding for local police departments to hire and train more officials through the existing program, part of wider package of police funding bills should be sent up in Congress.

it’s kind of efforts, Spanberger could almost single-handedly point out in slap down “protect the police” attack from the Republicans, even though the bills drew some criticism from more liberal wing of her party and from civil rights groups who want see more of focus on police accountability.

Spanberger was an active critic of rhetoric “protect the police” in the 2020 cycle during intense internal party debate after the flood of attacks from Republicans, especially in turning areas like her. But she said her bill is not a response to that rhetoric and is mainly about needs of police departments in her neighborhood – needs her to claim Vega, even if in uniform, voted against locally.

“There is a verifiable place Where are we in positions of elected office there is ability to support the police, she said. Every time I have the opportunity vote increase support federal law enforcement or local law enforcement via federal grant dollars, I did just that.”

Two candidates took diverging paths in law enforcement to put an end up on same campaign drag.

These experiences have taught me a lot. of her work in Congress, from providing a lens to law enforcement to explaining why she supports certain gun- measures to control the conversation on threats of domestic terrorism.

In swing boroughs of Virginia, Democrats stand firm on gun restrictions

Vega often spoke story of what inspired her to become a police officer: The MS-13 Gang shot her brother and killed his friend when they were teenagers. Vega, a daughter of immigrants from El Salvador joined Alexandria Police Department in 2011, became hostage negotiator. with department of Manassas Park and eventually ended up in Sheriff Prince William office. She appears in uniform at the end of each campaign appeal to supporters – putting her experience as a police officer at the center of her campaign with promises fight crime human trafficking and illegal immigration on the southern border.

“These are the questions I had to decide walk in- said Vega, – and that’s why I’m passionate about public safety. I’m passionate about law and order and that’s my heart when it comes to police work.”

The day after the Spanberger ad was removed, Vega held law enforcement. round the table she said focused on lack of cops, which she blamed in part on “anti-cop” rhetoric among Democrats – and how in her view drug and human trafficking at the border may still affect the 7th arrondissement. next day, she released endorsements from nine sheriffs representing the majority of sheriffs in area.

One of them, King George County Sheriff Chris Giles, said Vega’s job as a local law enforcement officer was the biggest draw. for his – but more in particular, he said, she is firsthand experience understanding how absence of mental health resources in a community affects law enforcement.

“It was one of the most important things that really helped me understand that she understands mental health problem because she works in law enforcement,” he said, “and she wants help in best way she can – at least she tells me so – at the federal level.”

Vega became a county board supervisor in 2020. She said she never voted in service of one of district budgets since the adoption office because she opposed tax increases, including in them, especially during a pandemic and during of high costs and rising inflation. She is also pushed it year hire more cops, an attempt that was ultimately unsuccessful on democratic majority board save for a little added civil positions.

If Vega: a new provocateur in Prince William County

Asked what she thinks of spanberger bill in Congress to offer federal grants for hiring more officers, Vega said, “It’s election season, Abby who ready to do and say whatever she wants, because for it’s about self-preservation. For me it’s literally betting my life on line of defense community I love.” She scolded Spanberger. vote for Judge George Floyd in The Police Act, which contains a provision that easier sue law enforcement.

But Spanberger said that Vega’s own comments in recent weeks have cast doubt on her support for law enforcement agencies. She pointed to the last comments in Vegi campaign messages calling the FBI “corrupt” for his search of former the residence of President Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago, as well as Vega past sympathy for On January 6, rioters claim they are being unfairly persecuted.

“I’m not with gun every single day for a few years. I wrote my fair share of search warrant, arrest warrant affidavits. I have set of experiences as well. That’s why I find [Vega’s] job title on commitment to law enforcement so frankly offensive”Spanberger said.

Stephen Farnsworth, politician science professor in university of Mary Washington said that although the Republicans hold firm on messages about “law and order” in the last decades on January 6, perhaps changed what. Now, he said, the Democrats had an opportunity to undermine their Republican opponents, declared a commitment to law and order and turned the script around. on them – exactly what Spanberger sought to do.

“One of realities of politics what’s this best defense this is good crime, he said. – Two years ago of Republicans tried attack democrats for comments of minority who talked about cutting off funding for the police. Now a lot of Democrats most likely attack Republicans for insufficiently supportive of the police, especially in commemoration of January 6”.

More recently, some Republicans in Congress made what easier for Democrats, calling for literally defunding the FBI after his search warrant in Mar-a-Lago. Vega, like many Republicans immediately tried to discredit the court-approved search by claiming in campaign fundraising emails that involved the FBI of “deep state” and that the search was “for No reason.” The FBI seized 11 kits of secret documents, and, according to The Washington Post, agents were looking for for some documents related to nuclear weapons.

Vega said she wouldn’t support stop funding the FBI, but support audit of agency, if elected, calling the search politically motivated.

“Anyone who would call FBI agents and law enforcement officers are corrupt and have a deep state, that disqualifies,” Spanberger said.

Farnsworth said that Spanberger’s efforts to make a difference on Vega, focus on these comments could activate more liberal base of in party it might otherwise not be too excited with her leading accusation of increasing police funding in Congress.

Spanberger and Rice’s bill was part of of a public-safety and police funding package — including the Investment Act to Protect Rep. Josh Gottheimer (DN.J.), which was shelved at the end of July. Black Congressional Caucus and Progressive Caucus wanted see more police accountability provisions added to the bills if they were going to include more financing for police. Numerous criminal justice and civil rights groups have supported these concerns, including the ACLU.

“We are not need repeat mistakes of in past as well as spend more public dollars without public accountability for results”, Udi Ofer, director of ACLU justice division said in an email to The Post.

BUT vote on legislative package was postponed, so that negotiations on the inclusion more fences for funding may continue and it is not clear when package you can go up again. Spanberger said the talks were constructive and that she did not view police accountability and funding as “mutually exclusive”, seeing the value in do both, or using financing as a tool allow departments have more Resources for de-escalation training or body cameras.

The law was popular. with number of law enforcement leaders in her county, including Culpeper Police Chief Chris Jenkins, who invited Spanberger for trip before this year. Jenkins said the smaller police departments in area may use grant money hire quality, community-oriented officers and advanced training, the ingredients he said were needed for building trust with residents.

The boss said he didn’t have anything. against Vega, but based on in work spanberger made in Congress — including a bill that she led to increased resources for improving mental health and substance abuse. resources – he decided throw his support behind her.

“I didn’t see anyone in long, that is more supportive of law enforcement agencies and our communityJenkins said. who identifies himself as a Republican, but notes that he is not vote based on on party.

He added: “In the end of day I think there is group of people who will vote party lines and I think there is one more group of people who like myself who will decide elections based on on who they think best candidate for whatever their problems.”
