Social media trend: why you should avoid the #MentalesAlterTest

Remember Article

A test for assessing mental age is currently widely shared – but there are some catches that give the quiz a bland aftertaste.

From sexual orientation to English level to Harry Potter character – on the online quiz site arealme.com you can test practically everything that you absolutely wanted to know (or not). A quiz that is supposed to indicate how things are with one’s own “mental age” is currently particularly popular. The results are usually quite flattering, with the hashtag # MentalesAlterTest spread the test results on Twitter, for example. A link to the website is always included so that those who are curious can get in directly.

But that is exactly not recommended. There is no mandatory text box on the test page, which usually asks when a website is called up to what extent website operators and often third-party providers are allowed to collect information, store it on the device and / or access it. Sometimes these queries are placed more, sometimes less obtrusively, and often the option of agreeing to everything without further inquiries is already highlighted. The legal reason for the request is the GDPR: website providers are obliged to obtain the consent of those concerned when data-related data is collected. Only “technically necessary” cookies do not require active consent.

Social trend with aftertaste: The partner list of the Test provider is long

If you click So directly on the test, you are not asked for permission to process information. A look at the homepage of the provider arealme.com reveals, however, that a long list of participating partners comes to the users here. “Some partners do not ask for your consent to the processing of your data and instead rely on their legitimate interests,” says the introductory text of the consent query. Whoever wants to register this legitimate interest can be seen in the partner details – and there are not just a few.

It is worth taking a closer look at the consent query. (Screenshot: arealme.com / t3n)

# MentalesAlterTest: Better to discuss in real life

Even the search for an imprint, which should actually be listed as mandatory, turns out to be unsuccessful between numerous advertisements. So if you value where your data ultimately ends up, you should probably avoid the quiz page – and maybe better have your mental age attested by your friends at the next pub evening instead of a test on the net.
