Sleep researchers are terrified: can advertising be smuggled into our dreams?

The all-encompassing commercials and the commercialization of our lives have long preoccupied society, just think of the relevant episodes of the Black Mirror series or games like The Outer Worlds, which are also this topic is being dissected.

Now, the sleepers ‘experts have been reassured by Coors’ brewery’s advertising campaign about ads planted in dreams.

Approx. In short, the 3-minute film was that Coors could not advertise the Super Bowl followed by millions for legal reasons, so they worked with Harvard University to create a video that the viewer would crave for their beer as soon as they wake up.

The news of the experiment was disseminated on YouTube and via an online announcement during the January match, but nearly 40 sleep researchers recently protested against the procedure in an open letter, drawing attention to the serious dangers of advertising dreams.

“Our dreams cannot become another playground for corporate advertisers. The potential for abuse of these technologies is as ominous as it is obvious at first.”

in a letter sounding the alarm, calling on the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to ban ads with subconscious messages. The only problem is that Coors’ advertising was actually a simple joke.

The experimental subjects in the film are almost all paid actors, and although one of Harvard’s professors was indeed involved in the project, no scientific publication has been published so far. So advertising is nothing more than a skillful guerrilla action by a beer brand looking for attention, but the sleep researchers who signed the letter took it very seriously.

Scientists’ message, of course, remains to be appreciated, as undisturbed sleep is one of the healthy its most basic necessity, but this time they were frightened by a phenomenon that for the time being can be classified more in the repertoire of dystopic sci-fi. Of course, we can never be sure when a Black Mirror episode will become a reality, the last 2 years are a testament to this.
