[Review] DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part Two for Nintendo Switch

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part Two for Nintendo Switch

As you already know, DOOM Eternal is the direct sequel to the award-winning DOOM (2016) developed by id Software and distributed by Bethesda Softworks . This title has an expansion called The Ancient Gods divided into two parts . The first part was announced in the Nintendo Direct that took place on the occasion of E3 2021 and launched that same day, June 15, in the hybrid console, of which we already offered you his review.

Well, today we will talk about DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Second part , which as its name suggests, is the second part of the expansion pass for this title that was released on March 18, 2021 for the rest of the platforms, but whose launch was announced at the end of last August on Nintendo Switch.

We remind you that the person responsible for the Switch port is Panic Button , an American video game developer based in Austin, Texas founded in 2007 that has become very popular among the general public thanks to its ports of triple A games from other platforms for Nintendo Switch, some of the most popular being DOOM and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus .

Was this long wait worth it? and will it meet expectations? Let’s check it out!

Argument

This second part of the expansion begins just after the events of the first part, so its argument could be considered spoiler , so read it at your own risk. If you have not completed the first part, we recommend you go to the next section.

The war against evil continued after the Slayer resurrected the Dark Lord himself as an act of defiance against the Maykr. After leaving Hell reduced to rubble, the Slayer must survive the treacherous journey to Immora, capital of this kingdom, and face the Dark Lord in ritual combat.

If the Slayer is victorious, all demons outside Hell will be destroyed and all connections to the Dark Kingdom will be severed. If he loses, the Dark Lord and his armies will take over everything…

You denied the gods and awakened an ancient evil. Now you must gather the scattered forces of the Sentinels, put the last bastion of Hell under siege, tear down the walls of their stronghold, and face the Dark Lord himself. The very soul of the universe is at stake. Here ends your war against hell.

Experience the exciting conclusion to the DOOM Slayer saga. From the moment you were activated by Samuel Hayden at the UAC facility on Mars, to the destruction of the Icon of Sin, all your battles have led up to this moment. Prepare to put Immora, the last stronghold of the Dark Kingdom, under siege, challenge the Dark Lord to single combat, and leave the demons locked in Hell forever.

The unbridled action returns

In terms of gameplay, it remains intact compared to the original game, so DOOM Slayer will feature the same moves: double jump, wall climb, and run . As always, knowing how to move well will be essential to be able to advance both on the map (there are platform areas), and when fighting against different enemies.

The three main game mechanics (execute, cut and burn) will continue to be fundamental to be able to advance and complete the game, as well as knowing how to alternate between all of them appropriately according to the situation. There will also be the Bloody Punch , a melee attack that deals extra damage. In addition, some demons have weak points and if we shoot them we can inflict more damage or even nullify their abilities. And of course, we will also have at our disposal all the arsenal of weapons that we have acquired previously in the game (combat shotgun, cannon heavy, plasma rifle, missile launcher, super shotgun, ballista, gatling gun, etc.) and the grenades (fragmentation and ice ).

As always, it is very important to be in motion practically all the time, since different enemies will attack us with all kinds of attacks and therefore we must be vigilant to avoid them and be able to counterattack.

Confrontations with demons in new levels

In this second part of the expansion we will fight against the armies of hell in three new levels (plus the final combat ) : the ruins of the ancient Sentinel settlements and the wonders of the Spear of the World, up to a city d devastated and invaded by the undergrowth on Earth where a mysterious portal is hidden, to reach Immora, the last stronghold of the Dark Lord, protected by colossal walls and the most advanced technology. Once again, a priori they may seem few levels, but they are quite extensive and their level of difficulty is high, so it is advisable to be well prepared.

New way of moving and new weapon

We will find a new mechanic to move through the scenarios. For this we will need to use the butcher hook of the super shotgun in attachment points . This will allow us to propel ourselves in the opposite direction to the hitch point to generate the necessary momentum to turn corners (we can jump at any time to cancel the swing). Therefore, we must combine the double jump, the race and additional hitch points in the air to cross difficult areas.

On the other On the other hand, there is a new weapon, the Sentinel’s hammer , which, as its name suggests, is a hammer, which is used to stun demons and resupply us with ammunition . If we hit groups of demons we can maximize the resources they release (if we fill their indicator we can destroy weak points and execute demons). In addition to giving ammo, Sentinel’s hammer can also increase the effects of our equipment. For example, when combined with the ice bomb, it will increase the health that the enemies drop and if we combine it with the flame spitter, it will increase the armor that the enemies drop. Knowing how to use it correctly and at the right time will be essential to be able to overcome certain confrontations.

New enemies make an appearance

As for the enemies, we will have creatures of all kinds, most of them return from the main title, as well as the first part of the DLC (Turrets, Spirits and Blood Maykr), but we will also face new enemies and they are the following:

  • Screaming Zombie : It is a fragile enemy that temporarily strengthens all demons in the arena upon death ( the strengthened demons are stronger, faster and more difficult to kill), so it is best to leave him and kill him at the end, if we do not want to complicate things a lot.
  • Ba Armored Rum : It can only be killed after its armor has been destroyed. We can use the plasma rifle to gradually undermine his armor until it is destroyed, as well as shoot at his mace (which is a weak point) when it flashes green to destroy it instantly (the armor will eventually regenerate).
  • Stone Imp : Resistant to most weapons, but vulnerable to the Combat Shotgun’s automatic fire mod and Sentry (killing him with automatic fire will get more ammunition for the shotgun).
  • Cursed Marauder : As its name suggests, we He will curse if he hits us. If it reaches us we will receive constant damage and we will not be able to use the race or attack it with weapons in which the objective has to be fixed. When we are cursed, we must use the bloody punch against him to kill him and eliminate the effect.
  • Riot Trooper : has an indestructible shield (yellow) that absorbs all frontal damage. To destroy it, we must shoot behind its shield.

    The exploration is still present

But beyond the fighting, the exploration will also be important, since in each level there will be a series of collectibles already known: codices . On the other hand, the Climbing encounters are also introduced as a novelty. These are encounters in two waves of increasing difficulty . To start them we must activate some bloody nests. The first wave is mandatory and if we pass it, we will receive a upgrade for the hammer Sentinel . The second is optional and more difficult, but if we pass it we will obtain a aesthetic object .

The good, if brief, two times good

Completing DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part Two will take us approximately 4 hours , an amount that can vary depending on the level of difficulty and the skill at the controls of each player. However, if you are complete players or you get stuck at some point, it can take a few more hours.

    Conclusion

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Part Two is a magnificent climax to this title, which will undoubtedly animate to return to the controls of the Slayer to end more hordes of demons, maintaining a frenetic gameplay and adding interesting news in terms of enemies, mechanics and scenarios.

If you liked DOOM Eternal and want to know its true ending or, simply, you have been wanting to fight against more demons, we definitely recommend you get the DLC.

Finally, tell you that DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods – Second part is obtained by acquiring the first part of the DLC (we will only have to update the game) and although each part of the DLC is independent, it is not very recommendable It is possible to play both parts before completing the base game, as it picks up the story just after the end of the game.
