Rep. Dan Goldman Criticizes Republicans for Projection in Mocking Party Members Ahead of Vote to Censure Rep. Adam Schiff

Rep. Dan Goldman Goes After Republicans for ‘Projection’

On Wednesday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) was censured by the House of Representatives. Ahead of the vote, Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) went after Republicans for their “projection” as he mocked party members.

Bringing up Rep. George Santos

During his remarks on the House floor, Goldman criticized a nameless lawmaker prior to the vote to censure Schiff. He brought up Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) and said, “One of my colleagues says ‘We will hold members accountable.’ You are the party of George Santos. Who are you holding accountable?”

Goldman referred to Santos, a freshman Republican who recently pleaded not guilty to 13 federal charges tied to money laundering, wire fraud, theft of public funds, and lying to the U.S. House. Goldman continued, “Who are you holding accountable? The guy is an alleged and acknowledged liar and indicted. And you protect him every day. Don’t lecture us with your projection and your defense of Donald Trump. It’s pathetic. And it’s beneath you, and it’s beneath this body. And I yield back.”

Mocking Republicans

Goldman continued to mock Republicans on the House floor. He said, “Boy, is Adam Schiff powerful. He can at once be the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, the special counsel investigating Donald Trump, manage and run the FBI, and be a judge ruling on [foreign intelligence] applications. It is remarkable that he, from his perch in Congress, can do all of that. Of course, he didn’t do any of that ― all he did was properly impeach the president of the United States for his gross abuse of power.”

The Vote to Censure Schiff

The vote to censure Schiff was a result of his comments during the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Schiff had paraphrased a conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a hearing, which led to accusations of misrepresenting the conversation.

Republicans had been pushing for Schiff to be censured or removed from his position as chairman of the Intelligence Committee. The censure resolution did not pass, with a final vote of 218-185.

Final Thoughts

Rep. Dan Goldman’s remarks on the House floor reflect the ongoing partisan divide in Congress. While Republicans accuse Democrats of protecting Schiff and misrepresenting the facts, Democrats accuse Republicans of protecting the president and ignoring his abuse of power. As we head into an election year, it’s unlikely that this divide will be bridged anytime soon.
