'Remasters Grand Theft Auto 3 trilogy coming this fall'

Remasters of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas may be in the works.
Kotaku says he heard this from sources. The three remasters are set to come to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox consoles, PC, Google Stadia, and mobile phones sometime in late October. It’s also possible that the PC version and mobile versions won’t be released until next year. Furthermore, the option is mentioned that the games will be given to people who buy the next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online. That game will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 11th. A possible late October release date would also coincide with GTA 3’s 20th anniversary year on October 22.

The remasters of the three GTA games would be made in Unreal Engine and would contain a “combination of new and old graphics”. One of the sources claims to have seen a remaster in action and reports that it reminds him of a GTA game with mods. The game’s interface is also getting a makeover.

Kotaku hasn’t said anything about Rockstar yet to have heard of it myself, but the development is said to be well advanced. The sources reporting it to Kotaku are said to have provided correct information weeks and even months before the updates to GTA Online and Red Dead Online – so the website trusts these sources.

Development of the remasters would be led by Scottish Rockstar Dundee. The studio is also said to be helping Rockstar with the next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto 5 due later this year. Rockstar Dundee was formerly known as Ruffian Games and has worked on Crackdown 2 and Crackdown 3.

There has been speculation for months about possible remakes or remasters of the trilogy that originally appeared on PlayStation 2. Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive previously pulled classic GTA mods from the internet, and an investor interview revealed that the company had three remasters planned this fall.

Kotaku also claims to have heard that other classic Rockstar games, including Red Dead Redemption, may eventually get remasters or portovers as well. However, that mainly depends on how well GTA remasters sell.
