President Joe Biden Cancels Visit to Jordan Amidst Regional Unrest
Unrest in the Middle East Leads to Cancellation of Biden’s Jordan Visit
President Joe Biden has decided to cancel his planned visit to Jordan due to escalating unrest in the region. This decision comes after a leaders summit on humanitarian aid for Palestinians was abruptly canceled following the bombing of a hospital in Gaza.
Originally, Biden was scheduled to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Palestinian Authority president Mahmound Abbas after his visit to Israel.
Jordanian foreign minister Ayman Safadi stated on state television, “There is no use in talking now about anything except stopping the war.”
The deadly bombing of the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City has caused an increase in tensions between Israel and Hamas, leading to widespread unrest across the region.
The White House expressed condolences for the lives lost and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded in the hospital explosion in Gaza.
In light of President Abbas’ announcement of days of mourning for the hospital attack victims, the decision not to travel to Jordan was also influenced by this mourning period.
Horrific scenes captured on video showed the aftermath of the bombing, with the Hamas militant group blaming Israeli airstrikes for the destruction of the hospital. Israel, however, denied responsibility and is currently conducting an investigation.
Protests Against Israeli Military Operation Erupt
Angry protesters in various capitals demanded an immediate end to the Israeli military operation.
Israel’s aerial bombardment campaign over the Gaza Strip, which it refers to as a total siege, has resulted in a humanitarian crisis. The population of two million people has been cut off from vital supplies such as water, food, and electricity.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza was intended to be a major focus of Biden’s trip, as demonstrated by the now canceled summit.
The United States, along with Egypt and Israel, has been working on establishing humanitarian corridors to evacuate women and children from the areas most affected by the conflict.
Biden expressed confidence in providing access to medicine, food, and water for the innocent people in Gaza during an interview on “60 Minutes.”
