In a keynote about Facebook Connect
, the award-winning programmer smoothly explains what’s up with the marketing talk surrounding Metaverse, whose vision was recently revealed by Mark Zuckerberg himself. In particular, the somewhat more offensive segments of Carmack’s statements made the rounds on social media such as Twitter.
“Well, here we are. Mark Zuckerberg has determined that the time is right now to build the Metaverse.” Carmack sounds mostly skeptical, even though he is responsible for making the vision a reality. Oculus has been part of Facebook since 2014; Carmack had taken up the position of technical director of the vr company a year earlier, after having worked for id Software for more than two decades.
Carmack’s conclusion is particularly dubious: “I’m especially concerned about the possibility that we’re investing years of effort and thousands of people, without then contributing to how consumers use VR devices.”
Meta, the new name for the company behind Facebook, among others, did the Metaverse earlier this week. During the Facebook Connect event
, Zuckerberg and his team showed an above all ambitious vision for the social platform.
The first promotional videos around Metaverse include holographic apparitions, facial recognition software and lifelike avatars, complete with pores. A new VR headset, Project Cambria
, was also briefly shown, which at least shows the body language and facial expression of the user seems to be able to interpret.
