Novo Nordisk Launches Wegovy Weight Loss Injection in the U.K.
Novo Nordisk has launched its Wegovy weight loss injection in the U.K., despite ongoing supply constraints. The Danish pharmaceutical company announced that the weekly injection would be available initially through a controlled and limited launch. Only certain patients who meet specific criteria outlined by the National Institute for Care and Excellence will be eligible to receive the drug on the country’s National Health Service (NHS). The drug will also be available privately through registered healthcare professionals.
Pricing and Availability
Novo Nordisk has not disclosed the final price agreed upon with NHS England for the drug. However, the company stated that the U.K. drug cost-effectiveness watchdog, NICE, has deemed it a “cost-effective use of NHS resources.” The cost of the drug in the private market will be determined by licensed prescribers. In the U.S., Wegovy has a list price of $1,350 for a monthly dose, while in Europe it retails for approximately 170 to 300 euros ($190-$330) per month. British insurance company Aviva has announced that Wegovy will not be covered under its policy.
Supply Issues and Monitoring
Novo Nordisk is closely monitoring supply issues for Wegovy. CEO Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen has stated that it could take “some years” before the company can meet the demand. In the U.K., a portion of the available supply will be allocated specifically for NHS treatment. The company will work with healthcare professionals to prioritize patients with the highest unmet medical need. Novo Nordisk has also implemented provisions in other markets to ensure continuity for existing patients and limit prescriptions to those with medical needs.
