The No More Ransom project is already celebrating its fifth anniversary. In the meantime, it has helped more than six million extortionist victims recover their files and saved nearly € 1 billion in extortionist ransom payments.
No More Ransom is an online portal launched in July 2016 by law enforcement and industry leaders ( PPP (public-private) association set up by Europol’s European Cybercrime Center, the National High Tech Crime Unit of the Dutch Police, McAfee and Kaspersky.
“Decoders available in the No More Ransom repository are more than helped six million people recover their files for free, preventing criminals from earning nearly a billion euros from extortion virus attacks.Currently, the system offers 121 free tools capable of decrypting 151 extortion virus families. The network has 170 partners connected to public and private networks.
How it works
No More Ransom aims to help victims encrypt their files, draw attention to the extortion virus threat and provide direct links to extortion victims and the general public to report attacks.
To receive a decoder, you must upload two encrypted files and a extortion virus record to the Through No More Ransom’s Crypto Sheriff, who tries to compare them to a list of available decryption tools. If a match is found, it provides a link to the appropriate extortion virus decoder with detailed instructions on how to resolve the files.
If no decoder is available, the service advises you to search for a match again in the future as the the database is regularly expanded with new unlocking tools. Ransomware advises victims never to pay, as this will finance future attacks by criminals, but instead take measures to prevent such attacks and reduce damage.
