Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, made his professional debut Tuesday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs fell 3-2 to the Montreal Canadiens. The 18-year-old forward, who became the first Penn State product to be selected first overall, stepped into the spotlight in Toronto.
Despite the high expectations surrounding his arrival, McKenna offered a candid assessment of his first outing. Following the loss, McKenna finished with a minus-2 rating and a single shot on goal, later telling reporters that the performance was not his best but that he was grateful for an immediate opportunity to improve in Wednesday’s game against the New York Islanders.
Performance and Linemates
McKenna saw 15 minutes and 19 seconds of ice time across 18 shifts in his debut. Head coach Craig Berube utilized the rookie primarily on a line with veterans John Tavares and William Nylander, granting him 2:33 of power-play time. While McKenna struggled to find the scoresheet, his linemate Nylander provided all of Toronto’s offense, netting both goals for the Maple Leafs.
Montreal secured the season-opening victory through goals from Josh Anderson, Alexandre Carrier, and Zachary Bolduc. The Canadiens’ defensive structure limited McKenna’s ability to utilize the playmaking skills he showcased with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, where he cemented his status as the consensus top prospect before making the jump to the professional ranks.
The Maple Leafs do not have long to dwell on the opening night loss. The team returns to the ice tonight, Wednesday, September 30, to host the New York Islanders. This back-to-back set will serve as an early test for McKenna’s conditioning and his ability to adjust to the speed of the NHL game following his first taste of regular-season action.
