Sometimes everyday encounters change everything. At Maria Mann it was a pawn collector. In the spring of 2018, the IT consultant at the time stood at the Düsseldorf train station early in the morning. While she was waiting for the ICE to Frankfurt, her gaze caught on an elderly woman who was furtively rummaging through garbage cans. “This moment has never let go of me. It could have been my grandmother, ”says Mann looking back. From then on, her thoughts kept revolving around poverty in old age – and the fact that women are particularly often affected. Couldn’t the problem be solved simply and pragmatically?
