NBA Sets December 2026 Deadline for Las Vegas and Seattle Expansion Decisions

As the 2026-27 NBA season tips off with its traditional 30-team field, the league is entering the final stage of a multi-year expansion process. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has established a target of December 2026 to officially announce the addition of two new franchises, marking the first time the league will grow its footprint since 2004.

While both Las Vegas and Seattle have long been viewed as the inevitable landing spots, the financial and operational requirements have created a distinct “priority gap” between the two cities. The league is currently navigating Year 2 of its 11-year, $76 billion media rights deal with NBC, Amazon, and the Disney-owned networks, a windfall that has helped push the projected entry price for new teams to record-breaking levels.

The Las Vegas Bidding War

Las Vegas has emerged as the primary focus of league governors due to the massive capital requirements and infrastructure needs unique to the market. Unlike Seattle, which has an existing venue, a Las Vegas expansion team requires a new, purpose-built arena. The total cost for a Las Vegas franchise and the accompanying facility is now estimated between $12 billion and $13 billion.

Three finalist groups have solidified their positions in the bidding for the Las Vegas market:

  • Nancy Walton Laurie and Bill Laurie
  • Steve Apostolopoulos and Marc Lasry (former co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks)
  • A combined bid featuring Bill Foley (owner of the Vegas Golden Knights) and Jerry Colangelo

While LeBron James has frequently expressed interest in owning a Las Vegas team through his partnership with Fenway Sports Group, The Sporting Tribune reports that his group is not currently among the three finalists vying for the primary license.

Seattle’s Operational Head Start

In contrast to the high-stakes bidding war in Nevada, the return of the NBA to Seattle is viewed as a more streamlined operation. Samantha Holloway, owner of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, is considered the leading contender to secure the franchise. Her bid is bolstered by the operational readiness of Climate Pledge Arena, which has already been vetted by NBA operational groups and described as state-of-the-art and ready for immediate professional basketball use with minor modifications.

According to reporting from BasketNews, Holloway’s status as the solidified frontrunner has made the Seattle process significantly quieter than the Las Vegas sprint. The “ready now” status of the Seattle market means the franchise could theoretically begin play as soon as the league is ready to authorize it.

Projected Timelines and Delays

The complexity of the Las Vegas bid has introduced a potential split in the debut dates for the 31st and 32nd teams. While the NBA originally targeted a simultaneous 2028-29 debut for both markets, the Las Vegas timeline may be pushed to the 2029-30 season. This potential delay is attributed to the construction requirements for the new arena required to house the team.

Seattle remains on track for a 2028-29 launch, leading to internal league discussions regarding whether to stagger the expansion or wait for both facilities to be completed.

Official expansion announcements are targeted for late 2026, though debut dates may vary between markets.

The sheer scale of the expansion fees—expected to eclipse the record $12.5 billion valuation of the Los Angeles Lakers set in 2025—reflects the league’s booming economic health. With the December 2026 announcement deadline approaching, the focus remains on whether the “frothier” bidding market in Las Vegas will force the NBA to finalize that deal first, or if Seattle’s infrastructure advantage will keep both cities on a parallel path.
