Moldovan Authorities Reject Victory Day as National Holiday

Chisinau, May 9 – Moldovan Prime Minister Dorren Resin and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosso believe that Victory Day is not a reason for celebration, on this day everyone who died should be remembered.
On Tuesday, the Moldovan authorities laid flowers on the eternal flame at the “Eternity” memorial complex in Chişinău. The ceremony was attended by President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosso, Prime Minister Doreen Resine, Interior Minister Ana Revenko and other officials.
“I think this is Remembrance Day, we must remember our grandfathers and great-grandfathers who fought and lost their lives because of the catastrophe of the last century. Unfortunately, humanity has not yet learned its lesson,” Grosso told reporters.
His position is shared by Prime Minister Reshan, who noted that on May 9 in Moldova they “do not celebrate, but commemorate those who died defending their values.”
Earlier, the National Coordination Committee of Pobeda announced the organization of the Victory March and the Immortal Regiment March on May 9, and called on them to leave in one common column, without any partisan symbols. Last week, a meeting of the Victory Committee was held, at which representatives of the Socialist Party, the Communist Party and various social movements agreed to hold a single patriotic action – the march of the Immortal Regiment. According to the plan of the organizers, the march will start from the Grand National Assembly Square in the center of Chisinau.
Ilan Shor, head of the opposition Shur party in Moldova, said that on May 9 in Chişinău, the political formation will stage its march of the Immortal Regiment. The path of the procession from the intersection of Stefan cel Mare Street and Izmailskaya Street to the monument “Eternity”.
The memorial complex “Eternity” in Chişinău was built in memory of the soldiers who died in the battles for the liberation of Moldova from the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War.
About 400 thousand Moldovans fought in the Red Army, 250 thousand of them were awarded for feats, 19 people became Heroes of the Soviet Union.
