Department facing increasing political pressure to disclose his plans in a business. On Thursday, House Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn B. Maloney (DN.Y.) accused the Justice Department of of obstructing her committee’s investigation of 15 boxes of records trump took on his estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Maloney claims that the Justice Department is “interfering.” with investigation, preventing the National Archives and Records Administration from handing over over detailed list of content of refurbished boxes.
If the department is planning an investigation, that might explain why it won’t want MPs take inventory of in materials.
It is not clear to what extent the Department of Justice already rated the content of boxes arranged by the National Archives to be retrieved from Mar-a-Lago in January – including documents clearly marked as classified, as previously reported by The Washington Post. However, the Department of Justice was in touch with Archives about moving own investigation forward, people familiar with said the thing.
Addressing the matter earlier, Garland said the department “will do what we always do in these circumstances – look at the facts and the law and draw conclusions.”

In her letter Thursday, Maloney said her committee needed more clarification as to why the Justice Department was blocking her request. for inventory of records.
“The committee is not wish interfere in in any way with any potential or ongoing Department investigation of Justice,” Maloney wrote. “However, the Committee has not received any explanation why the Department is preventing the provision of NARA information to the compliance committee with in [Presidential Records Act]including unclassified information content description of 15 cases from Mar-a-Lago.
An FBI spokeswoman told The Post: “We can’t confirm nor deny the existence of investigation.”
The National Archives sent a letter to the committee at the end of last month saying that on the foundation of “consultation” archive with To the Department of Justice, the Archives were unable to “provide any comment and comply with the committee’s request. This instead sent a committee to the office of the Ministry of Justice of Legislative Affairs for any additional questions.
Maloney asked the Justice Department to let the committee know by April 14 “whether he tells NARA that he can cooperate fully with with Committee’s request, including by providing the requested inventory of documents retrieved from Mar-a-Lago.”
