Meta announces closure of “Messenger Lite” app
Introduction
Meta has announced the closure of the “Messenger Lite” instant messaging application on the Android system, stating that the application will not be available for use after September 18 next year.
The company introduced the app in late 2016 as a scaled down version of the main Messenger app to run on low-spec Android devices.
Users of the “Messenger Lite” app notice that when they launch the app, a message appears urging them to switch to the full version of Messenger and indicating that the Lite version will soon be retired in September.
The company stressed that the decision to close the app will not impact conversations as it will remain saved and available on Messenger.
It’s no longer available for download
The Messenger Lite app is no longer available to download for new users through the Google Play Store, but previous users can download it until it is removed from the store.
The announced application is very popular due to its simple design and interface that provides basic communication functions, as well as other characteristics such as small size and small storage space requirements, efficient operation on low-end devices while reducing data consumption. and allowing you to communicate even if you have a weak or unstable Internet connection.
However, the app lacks many of the features available in the full version of Messenger, including night mode.
Reasons unknown
Meta did not disclose the reasons behind its shutdown of the well-known app, but press reports indicate that improvements in mobile device performance in recent years are the main reason for the company’s decision.
It is worth noting that the Facebook Lite application is still available, and the company did not mention its closure in the current period.
Earlier, Meta also announced the end of support for SMS text messages in the Messenger app.
