city of Fort Myers Beach on Florida’s southwest coast has been swept away by Hurricane Ian, a local politician said late Thursday.
“I made it’s about two thirds down island and i would say 90% of the island is pretty much gone,” Fort Myers Beach City Councilman Dan Allers tells CNN’s Don Lemon. “If you don’t have a high rise apartment or newer specific home that is built by the same standards today, your house almost gone.”
city, with a population of about 5600 people is on Estero Island in bay of Mexico.
A lot of people struggled to get to higher land during a storm surge, Allers said.
Instead of of where homes stood, there are only rubble, said the member of the council.
“Each home quite a bit of on there is no beach anymore,” Allers said. “A little of in homes on in side the streets are completely gone and there is nothing but a hole with water, he said.
Allers, who evacuated to higher earth during a storm, later discovered that his own home was lost.
“Obviously, everything inside is gone,” he said, although the structure survived. “Perhaps we can rebuild,” he added.
