Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has announced that she has co-founded a company that makes and sells healthy foods and drinks for children, products she says will be less harmful to their health.
Obama said PLEZi Nutrition is committed to providing children with tasty and healthy foods and drinks as they are low in sugar and high in nutritional value, adding, “I think there is a way to build a successful company and do the right thing for our kids. You have to find ways to change the food industry.” And the drinks themselves.
As a former first lady, Obama promoted healthy habits through the Let’s Move campaign, which promoted nutritious school meals and required food companies and restaurant chains to commit to reducing their sugar, salt and calorie intake.
The company’s launch comes at a time when it was revealed that about half of young children in the United States don’t eat fruits and vegetables every day, but most of them consume large amounts of sugary drinks.
Although pediatricians have long advocated limiting sugar and sweetened juices, most families do not follow this advice, and some foods advertised as healthy contain too much sugar or sweeteners.
