Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes helps keep your teeth and gums healthy and prevents plaque buildup.
Colgate experts recommend changing toothbrushes every three to four months. But that may not be enough to keep your toothbrush clean for as long as you use it.
Dentist Dr. Jordan Brown revealed the disgusting truth about where we usually put our toothbrushes in a video on his TikTok channel.
In a video that has over 120,000 likes, the dentist explains that no matter how clean you keep your bathroom, having a toilet is reason enough not to put your toothbrush in there, but put it somewhere else.
Dr. Brown explains: “Everyone should know this about their toothbrush. If you can see your toilet bowl and your toothbrush in the same view without moving your head, there is a 99% chance that your toothbrush has feces on it. Aerosols from your toilet in the air.” And it goes everywhere, including your toothbrush.”
And, to use the technical term, every time you flush the toilet, a so-called “fecal fountain” occurs. This sprays microscopic droplets from the toilet bowl all over the surrounding space, including your toothbrush, which “rests innocently” in a cup on the sink. So Dr. Brown urged people to close the toilet seat when turning on the flush.
Obviously, the bedroom is the best place to store a manual or electric toothbrush. But if that’s too much of a hassle for you, Brown suggested that you could keep your toothbrush clean by keeping it away from other people’s toothbrushes.
You can also buy covers to cover your brush against harmful bacteria.
