On 30 June, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) announced its roadmap for 2021, which will include the Hungarian research cloud ELKH Cloud after the successful completion of a thorough evaluation and selection process. Under the new phase, 11 new research infrastructure projects were adopted, with a total grant of € 4.1 billion to address European research challenges.

ESFRI designed and regularly updated to identify new research infrastructures of pan-European interest and major infrastructure upgrades for the next ten to twenty years, which it encourages to create. Accepted drafts include SLICES (Scientific Large-Scale Infrastructure for Computing / Communication Experimental Studies), which includes the ELKH Cloud, which provides large-scale computing and communication capacity for a variety of experiments and aims to: create an efficient research infrastructure to support digital sciences, including energy use issues and support for the implementation of the European Green Deal

The SLICES research infrastructure will therefore include the ELKH Cloud, which was previously SLICES was also involved in the preparation of the ESFRI program and in organizing the European use of the SLICES infrastructure. ELKH Cloud is a continuation of the MTA Cloud project launched in October 2016. its goal is to provide access to cloud computing and data storage capacity, modern hardware, cloud-based software, and to involve as many international projects as possible, primarily to Hungarian researchers.
