Platform Meta Instagram plans to launch a texting app to compete with Twitter.
The company is currently testing the project with a number of celebrities and influencers and has made it available without notice to a select number of creators over the course of several months.
The app will be separate from Instagram but will allow people to link accounts, and it could be revealed as early as June, according to Leah Habermann, who teaches social media and influencer marketing at the University of California, Bloomberg reports.
The chaos caused by Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter has prompted some users to look for alternatives, creating opportunities in the market.
“Historically, we know that Meta prefers fetching and updating features over other apps based on what they expect from their apps,” Habermann said.
She pointed out that Musk talked about transforming Twitter into a comprehensive app with many features beyond media publishing.
“Based on the meta track record of borrowing from other platforms, they are likely to succeed with all the experience they gather,” Habermann added.
