“Especially Potent” Pollen caused recent warm and humid weather causes symptoms worse than usual for Hay fever sufferers, the Met Office said.
Combination of humid and warm weather in May means that despite the lack of pollen count higher than usual, the pollen itself is stronger, experts say.
Yolanda Klulow, relationship with the Met Office manager for health and air quality, the Met Office’s Weather Snap podcast said: “The potential of these pollen grains can be more intense this year and it comes down to weather we had in Spring.
“Warm and humid May together with relatively warm spring, so there is chance that the pollen that developed especially strong.”
Pollen from cereals is usually causes a spike in early symptoms of hay fever of June and about the same time in July. This is due to the fact that about 150 types of simultaneous flowering of grass pollen.

Allergy UK also warned about new thunderstorm asthma, in which asthma and hay fever patients suffer from more severe symptoms when weather is turbulent.

Charity also said the pollen season starts earlier and lasts longer due to climate change.
