Gov. Abbott citing violence in Chicago was ‘racist’ aberration, leaders and experts say

Abbott, a Republican, proposed tightening gun laws will not prevent mass shootings because there are still high rates of gun violence in states that have done so.

“I hate to say it, but there is more people filmed every weekend in Chicago than is in schools in Texas. And we need understand that people who think maybe if we just realize tougher gun laws, it’s going solve this,” Abbott said. – Chicago, Los Angeles and New York refute this thesis. So, if you are looking for for a real solution, Chicago teaches that what you are talking about is not real solution. Our work must come up with real solutions that we can implement.”

Civil rights leaders and gun Violence experts say Abbott’s comments were unfair and racist for including poor, black and brown communities in the conversation about mass shootings getting assault weapons.

“Governor Abbott once again in misdirection and fear-mongering to justify their deplorable opposition to an assault weapons ban.” – Marc Morial, President of National Urban League, CNN reported. “Given that Texas is suffering higher rate of gun deaths than in Illinois year after the year Governor Abbott should join this effort instead of the demonization of abandoned communities that suffer the worst consequences of weak gun laws.”

Illinois suffered 1,745 people. gun deaths in 2020 compared to 4164 in Texas, according to the CDC.
Gun violence experts also to say that the comparison is inappropriate because nature of gun violence in cities like Chicago is different from a Texas elementary school shooting. Recent shooting in big cities, they say more target.

Jonathan M. Metzl, professor of sociology and medicine, health and society at Vanderbilt University, said the Chicago gun violence is result of systemic problems, including poverty, housing insecurity and gangs. School shooting like in one in Uvalde, however, are associated with the presence of weapons and loose restrictions on age and public carry, he said.

It “complete racial stereotype” for Republicans consistently refer to Chicago, home to most blacks and Hispanics, every time gun control debate, Metzl said.

“It’s a time-tested dog whistling on right,” he said. – He (Abbott) playing to his base with what.”

Tristan Bridges, university sociologist of California, Santa Barbara, said Abbott “individualizes” the mass shootings, saying they are result of evil or mental illness, and then assume that in Chicago problem.

“Looking at the school shooting that happened in his backyard, he took a bad apple approach,” Bridges said. “But when he talks about Chicago, he (means) it’s a rotten garden. And that’s racism.”

Elected officials in Illinois also convict Abbott on Wednesday.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the criticism of Chicago “a long-standing Republican device.” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Democrat, also rejected Abbott’s offer comparison. “You lie about Chicago and what really perpetuates gun violence,” Pritzker wrote. on Twitter. “Majority of used weapon in Shooting in Chicago comes from the states with sluggish gun laws. To make better. You have 19 children and two teachers who deserve our best.”

Some leaders have said that the mention of the Texas governor of executions in the three largest cities in the country distracted from the presentation real solutions gun violence in Texas. There were several more mass shootings. in state in recent years, including the El Paso Walmart shooting in 2019 Santa Fe High School shooting in 2018 and the Sutherland Springs church shooting in 2017.

This was stated by NAACP President Derrick Johnson. gun violence in other cities have nothing to do with elementary school shootings in Texas. Priority, he says, should ensure the safety of citizens at school, work places of worship and groceries store.

“We need stay focused on in issue and not allow divisive and racist comments to detract from the dominant narrative,” Johnson said. “We need common meaning gun control.”
