Al-Shabaab militants attacked the base of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (AMTSOM) in the city of Bolumere, 130 km southwest of the capital Mogadishu.

In turn, the deputy press secretary of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces, Deo Akiki, said that the attack took place this morning on the base, and Al-Shabaab militants were behind it.

He added: “We are awaiting official communication from the headquarters of the African Union Transition Mission.”

Notably, the mission usually assists the Somali government in its war against the movement.

He said on Twitter that he was evaluating the security situation without giving further details.

While Al-Shabaab confirmed in a statement that it carried out suicide attacks and killed 137 soldiers.

There has also been no official confirmation of the death toll, and the movement usually cites figures that differ from those published by the authorities.

In addition, the government’s victory over the movement since last year has weakened its control over patches of territory, but it is still capable of launching large strikes against government, commercial and military targets.
