Michael Mann’s Highly Anticipated Film “Ferrari” Set to Release in December
Introduction
Michael Mann, renowned director of films such as “Blackhat,” is making a comeback with his latest documentary, “Ferrari.” This movie has been in the making since 2000 and is set to be one of the most awaited films of the year. Mann has expressed his desire to create this film since he was a 24-year-old film student, and now his vision is finally coming to life.
The Focus of the Film
“Ferrari” revolves around the iconic businessman Enzo Ferrari and his participation in the significant Mille Miglia race in 1957. This 1,000-mile open-road endurance race spanned across Italy, with the movie focusing on the race’s last leg. Unfortunately, a tragic accident involving a Ferrari driven by Alfonso de Portago resulted in the race’s cancellation. The incident claimed the lives of nine individuals, including five children, Edmund Nelson, the ship’s captain, and Portago himself.
The Cast
The film boasts an A-list ensemble cast, including Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, Sarah Gadon as Linda Christian, Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari, Jack O’Connell as Peter Collins, Patrick Dempsey as Piero Taruffi, Valentina Bellè as Cecilia Manzini, Massi Furlan as an Italian journalist (voice), and Lino Musella as Sergio Scaglietti.
Release Date and Distribution
“Ferrari” was initially produced by STX Entertainment, which later merged with Indian media company ErosSTX. Due to this merger, STX is no longer involved in distribution and will solely focus on film production. Consequently, the film could not be released alongside Guy Ritchie’s “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.”
However, it has been announced that the independent distributor Neon, renowned for movies like “Parasite,” “I Tonya,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “The Worst Person in the World,” will distribute “Ferrari” in the United States. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2023, coinciding with the release of Warner Bros.’ musical adaptation of “The Color Purple” and George Clooney’s sports film “The Boys in the Boat.”
The world premiere of “Ferrari” will take place at the 80th Venice Film Festival, running from August 30 to September 9. Additionally, the movie will be showcased at the New York Film Festival during its closing night.
Trailer and Plot
Although no trailer has been released yet, with the film’s imminent release, fans can expect a teaser to arrive soon. The plot of “Ferrari” centers around Enzo Ferrari’s life as he navigates family issues and prepares for the 1957 Mille Miglia race. The film delves into his struggles, including divorce, bankruptcy, and the pressure of overseeing a team of drivers in the race.
The movie might also shed light on the challenging court case that followed the tragic accident, which led to the race’s premature end. Enzo Ferrari faced charges related to the incident, as the faulty car was manufactured by his company. To uncover the full story, audiences will have to watch the film and avoid spoilers.
Based on a Book by Brock Yates
The story of “Ferrari” is adapted from the book “Enzo Ferrari—The Man, The Cars, The Races, and the Machine” written by the late author and writer Brock Yates in 1991. Yates, a racing enthusiast and former NASCAR pit reporter for CBS, also organized the renowned Cannonball Run race and hosted the racing show “American Sports Cavalcade” on TNN.
In an interview with Variety, Mann hinted at the film’s intense and graphic portrayal of car crashes, emphasizing explicit details such as severed limbs and torsos. The movie’s score, composed by Daniel Pemberton, will further contribute to the film’s overall impact.
With Mann’s impressive portfolio and a stellar cast, “Ferrari” is undoubtedly a film worth anticipating. As it hits theaters in December, audiences can witness the captivating story of Enzo Ferrari unfold on the big screen.
