F1: Valtteri Bottas will race for Alfa Romeo from 2022

Finnish driver changes teams in the tenth season in F1

Valtteri Bottas will be a driver for the Alfa Romeo Formula 1 team from 2022. The Finn will leave Mercedes to join the team led by Frédéric Vasseur next season with a deal of several years that were not specified either by the team or the driver.

“A new chapter in my racing career is starting: I am excited to be joining Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN for the 2022 season and beyond, for which will be a new challenge together with an iconic manufacturer. Alfa Romeo is a brand that needs no introduction, as they have written some great pages in the history of Formula 1 and it will be an honor to represent this brand.”

“The potential of the structure in Hinwil is evident and I am excited about the opportunity to help the team advance to the front of the grid, especially with the new regulation in 2022 that gives the team an opportunity to take a leap forward in their performance. I’m grateful for the trust the team has placed in me and I can’t wait to repay their faith: I’m as hungry as ever to fight for good results and, when the time comes, for victories.”

Already entered in the second half of the current season, Bottas announces the change from a team that fights for world titles and is an engine supplier to one that is a client team (of Ferrari) and that fights for positions in the second half of the peloton.

“I know Fred well and I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of the team I’ll be working with, building relationships as strong as those I have at Mercedes. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved at Brackley and I’m totally focused on finishing the job as we battle it out for another world championship, but I’m also looking forward to the new challenges that await me in the coming year.”

The driver who has been most talked about to take Bottas’ place at Mercedes to partner Lewis Hamilton (contract until 2023 ) is the British George Russell (23 years old) who has represented Williams since he debuted in F1 in 2019.
