Examining scientific discoveries, the union is preceded by China, the United States and Japan

More than half of Europeans believe that China (58%), the United States (57%) and Japan (54%) are ahead of the European Union in scientific discovery – according to a Eurobarometer survey published by the European Commission on Thursday

According to the survey, technologies under development, in particular solar energy, artificial intelligence and the control of communicable diseases and vaccines they will affect life for the next 20 years. Respondents’ scientific and technological interest has grown most in health and medical care, as well as in the fight against climate change. Respondents’ interest in new medical discoveries has increased, from 82% to 86% since 2010.

Europeans have a positive view of scientists and their key characteristics are intelligence (89%) and reliability (68%). percent) and cooperation (66 percent). More than two-thirds (68 percent) say researchers need to intervene in policy debates to ensure that decisions are made on the basis of scientific evidence.

The survey found that the majority of respondents gain knowledge from television. scientific and technological developments (63 per cent), secondarily online social networks and blogs (29 per cent), and online or print media products (24 per cent). The majority considers it right not only to involve scientists in research and innovation, and sees this as a guarantee that science and technology will be based on societal needs and values ​​(61 per cent).

Nearly three-quarters of respondents (72 per cent) believe that governments should ensure that new technologies benefit everyone, and even more (79 per cent) agree that governments should encourage private companies to take action on climate change.
